How to Romance Kaidan Alenko
Basic Information
Kaidan Alenko is a Companion in Mass Effect 3. He is available for romance and a possible love interest towards a MALE or FEMALE version of Commander Shepard. You can continue or rekindle your relationship with him if you previously had a romance progress and imported your save file in Mass Effect 1. Take note that he must be alive in your playthrough during the events in Mass Effect 1 (Vimire: Assault) or if you are starting a new game, during Character Creation, make sure to choose that Ashley Williams was killed in action instead of him.
Hospital Visits
Everything will start when you are on a mission that is called Priority: Mars. Your goal to start a good conversation with him by gaining his trust since he is highly suspicious of you. When Kaidan talks to you about your alliance with Cerberus, answer him with "It was a temporary alliance" and "You know me better than that" during the first scene, while on the second scene with her, choose the dialogues "How can you say that?", followed by "I never left".
At the end of your mission on Mars, Kaidan will be heavily injured where he'll spend most of his time recovering at the Huerta Memorial Hospital on the Citadel. While he is recovering, you can drop by Sirta Supplies in the hospital and purchase the TM88 - Peruvian Whiskey which you can give him later on - your conversations will be more important but giving him the gift will also improve your chances of romancing him.
While he is resting, visit him as much as you can, go do missions, and wait for Kaidan to send you an e-mail, indicating that you can visit him at the hospital. Now, if you were loyal to him and you didn't romance anyone in Mass Effect 2, then you will be able to re-establish your love for him. If ever you did romance someone in ME2, then you will have the chance to redeem yourself by explaining and apologizing to him. If you lie, it will make him angry and he'll ask you to leave his room.
The Citadel Coup
During the events in Priority: The Citadel II, things will escalate where Udina assists Cerberus in launching a coup against the Citadel Council and you'll have Kaidan in helping with escorting the council escape. In this mission, you will have to go pass Trust checks here which determines if Kaidan will side with you and also determines if she lives or dies. Check the information below to identify the number of points that can either strengthen or weaken your relationship with her, based on the following sequences and interactions:
- +2 Points if you were able to romance her in Mass Effect 1.
- +1 Point for sparing the council at the end of ME1, while sacrificing the council yields -1 Point
- You get -2 Points if Kirrahe died in ME1, while Thane died in ME2. This causes events where no one is able to stop Kai Leng from killing the Salarian Councillor, as well as Udina fabricating footage showing that Shepard is the one killing them instead.

Meeting at Apollo Cafe
Inviting him to join your crew and aboard the Normandy progresses things forward into having a relationship with him. And from here, you can start building up that relationship. To seal the relationship, Kaidan needs to invite you over to meet with him at the Apollo Cafe of the Citadel. So do missions first, and always check up on him and talk to him when you can - also, be nice to him and choose caring dialogue lines.
When you are invited by Kaidan, he will reminisce about how he had beers with his parents back in Vancouver. Eventually, he will also reflect on the relationship between you two. When he says he's grateful that he has convinced you to come, answer him with "Glad we're getting to talk". Kaidan will also forgive you in this sequence for cheating on him on someone else in Mass Effect 2. Next, he mentions that he wants to know more about the relationship between you two and he asks you what you want, choose "I want to be together". This locks in the relationship between Shepard and Kaidan.
Events after Locking-in Kaidan
Now that you've said Yes to Kaidan, you've confirmed that he will be Shepard's love interest for the entirety of the game, meaning you won't be able to have another relationship with anyone else, besides him. One thing to take note of is that there are additional sequences and interactions with Kaidan if you own the Leviathan and Citadel DLCs.
Priority: Earth
In the events during the final mission, Priority: Earth, Kaidan will visit Shepard in your cabin on the Normandy where the Romance Scene will trigger and you'll have your last moments with him before the assault on Cerberus HQ. If players own the Extended Cut, during the final charge to the conduit beam, a Mako will overturn and land dangerously next to him. If Shepard's EMS is 1,749 or lower, a Harbinger will vaporize Kaidan with the laser beam. On the other hand, if it is 1,750 or higher, he will just be injured by the Mako and Shepard calls for an emergency extraction where the two will have their final moments.
Ending with Kaidan
After the firing of the Crucible, he will be seen placing Shepard's name on the Memorial Wall. On the other hand, if you picked Destroy and your EMS is 3,100 or more, he will smile and refrain from placing the plaque sensing that Shepard is still alive, and the Normandy is seen flying off.
