How to Romance Steve Cortez

Basic Information

Lieutenant Steve Cortez is an NPC in Mass Effect 3, he is an Alliance pilot serving Commander Shepard aboard the Normandy SR-2. He is available for romance and a possible love interest towards a MALE Commander Shepard only.

Finding Steve Cortez

In order to start your conversation with Steve, you need to complete a couple of missions first, and after completing one, always check the certain locations to start a conversation with him. For your first encounter, you'll find him in the Cargo Bay listening to the last recording that was left by his late husband, Robert. When you find him there, speak to him and choose dialogue lines (reassuring Paragon options) that will comfort him. During the conversation, Cortez will thank Shepard for his words of encouragement.

Go on another mission and during your free time when you're back, for the second encounter, you'll find him working at the back of the nearby Kodiak. Speak to him again and choose "Don't work too hard", followed by "Do it for me" to persuade him to take a break. For the third encounter, rinse and repeat, do another mission and then return until you find him at the balcony in the Normandy Dock: Bay D24. Speak to him again to learn more about his past and choose positive dialogues and choose quick Paragon interrupt when it prompts. Next, you'll find him at the Citadel. He'll be at the memorial wall near the entrance of the Docks: Holding Area. Approach him and speak to him again.

How to Lock in Steve Cortez

Citadel: Purgatory Club

If you were successful with speaking to him three times, as well as being able to comfort him by choosing positive dialogues and using Paragon interrupt options, then the next time you visit the Citadel, head to the Purgatory Club where you'll find him there. Shepard notices that Steve looks happier and Cortez replies that Shepard was right about the past being his and that no moment should be taken for granted. During your conversation with him, if you want to have a relationship with him:

  • By the club's bar, choose the dialogue options "I'm eye candy too", followed by "Waiting for the right man"
  • Next. accept Steve's offer to dance with him and while you are both on the dance floor the two have an intimate conversation.
  • During the conversation, a Paragon interrupt will prompt, clicking it or not will still result in the two sharing a kiss, which means you're locked in a relationship with Steve.

Events after Locking-in Steve

Now that you've committed to having a relationship with Steve, you've confirmed that he will be Shepard's love interest for the entirety of the game, meaning you won't be able to have another relationship with anyone else, besides her. One thing to take note of is that there are additional sequences and interactions with Steve if you own the Leviathan and Citadel DLCs.

Priority: Earth

In the events during the final mission, Priority: Earth, Steve will visit Shepard in your cabin on the Normandy where the Romance Scene will trigger and you'll have your last moments with him before the assault on Cerberus HQ. Make sure you choose the dialogue line "I'd like that" to make sure the sequence triggers.

Final Moments with Steve

After the firing of the Crucible, Steve will be seen placing Shepard's name on the Memorial Wall. On the other hand, if you picked Destroy and your EMS is 3,100 or more, Steve will smile and refrain from placing the plaque sensing that Shepard is still alive, and the Normandy is seen flying off.
