War Assets in Mass Effect 3 are all the resources, be it manpower or different types of technology, that Commander Shepard can amass throughout the game, to use against the Reapers in the final showdown. War Assets are assigned a point value, indicating Total Military Strength, which is then multiplied by a Readiness Rating to produce the galaxy's Effective Military Strength, which determines success in the final battle against the Reapers.

Readiness Rating

The readiness rating is presented as a percentage of the collected War Assets that contribute to the galaxy's Total Military Strength. The Effective Military Strength is calculated like this

Total Military Strength x Readiness Rating = Effective Military Strength.

To increase the Readiness Rating you can take part in the following events:

  • Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer
  • Mass Effect: Infiltrator
  • Mass Effect 3: Datapad
  • N7 HQ

It is encouraged to participate in the events mentioned, all part of the Galaxy at War, in order to maximize the Military Strength given by each War Asset.

Sword, Shield and Hammer

When you start Priority: Earth, all gathered War Asset are divided into three different groups, code named Sword, Shield and Hammer. Sword and Shield consist of all allied fleets and Starships, while Hammer is composed of all the ground forces. Sword attacks the Reaper Fleet above Earth to buy time for Hammer to land and engage the Reaper forces on the ground. In the meantime, Shield escorts the Crucible into position to dock with the Citadel.

The number of War Assets amassed and their combined military effectiveness rating, determines how long can Sword and Hammer hold on until the end of the mission. The survival and continued defense of both Sword and Hammer are crucial to the success of the final mission.
